Welcoming a newborn into your family is an exciting and life-changing experience, but it can also feel a little overwhelming, especially in those first few weeks. At National Pediatric Center in Flushing, NY, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our team specializes in newborn care, helping parents navigate this special (and sometimes challenging) time with confidence and ease.

Feeding and Sleeping: Finding a Rhythm

In the early weeks, much of your baby’s time will be spent eating and sleeping. Newborns typically feed every two to three hours, whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding. It’s normal for feedings to feel frequent at first, but as your baby grows, they’ll start to develop a more predictable schedule.

Sleep, on the other hand, can feel a little less predictable. Newborns sleep a lot, up to 16 to 17 hours a day, but it’s often in short stretches. This is completely normal, and over time, your baby will begin to consolidate their sleep into longer periods. At National Pediatric Center, we’re here to answer your questions about feeding, sleeping, and everything in between.

Umbilical Cord and Skin Care

Caring for your baby’s umbilical cord stump is an important part of newborn care. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid submerging your baby in water until the stump falls off, which usually happens within the first two weeks. Your baby’s skin may also go through some changes in the early weeks, such as peeling or developing baby acne. These are typically harmless and resolve on their own, but if you have concerns, we’re here to help.

When to Call the Pediatrician

It’s normal to have questions or concerns as you adjust to life with a newborn. At National Pediatric Center, we encourage parents to reach out if they notice anything unusual, such as a fever, difficulty feeding, or changes in your baby’s behavior. Regular checkups are also essential during this time to monitor your baby’s growth and development.
